Foster Families

Why foster families?

Jesus commands his followers and friends to love and welcome children, and to serve the most vulnerable in our communities. As individuals and families have made a home in First Covenant, we share a desire to love and serve these vulnerable children, their families, their caregivers, and their caseworkers.

Foster children face tremendous challenges in Oregon’s foster care system. In response, we want to embody the loving, tender presence of God through the following ministry partnerships.

Partnership Spotlight: Every Child PDX

Every Child PDX connects caring community members with vulnerable children and families in partnership with the Department of Human Services. With a broad network of support, Every Child PDX is dedicated to the flourishing of every child.

In partnership, First Covenant hosts a monthly “Foster Parent’s Night Out” event, providing a safe, fun, and nurturing environment for foster children while their foster parents take time to run errands, rest, or enjoy a date.

We are always looking for new volunteers to join us at this monthly event. New volunteers must past a mandatory background check and complete a brief training and orientation session.

Partnership Spotlight: Project 48

Project 48 is a local nonprofit organization that provides essential items to children who are transitioning into the foster care system. The Oregon foster care system has an average of 12,000 children a year and most youths come into foster care with nothing other than the clothing they are wearing.

In partnership with Project 48, we collect and create “comfort bags” filled with essential items such as toiletries and new clothes, providing support to these children during a challenging transition to new homes.
